Toward the end of January, a bunny named Tony was surrendered to the Kingston Humane Society. Given up because of his owner's allergies, Tony was the troubling picture of bunny neglect.

When he came to the shelter, Tony was underweight, his coat was matted and full of fleas and he was quiet and sad. An evaluation soon revealed that Tony had badly maloccluded (crooked and misaligned) and overgrown teeth that were hurting him and preventing him from eating well. Tony's teeth would require ongoing maintenance and would never grow properly. Trimming them was the first step to getting Tony better.

Jessica Hellard, a dedicated and active KHS volunteer with a focus on the bunnies coming to the shelter, stepped in and began the process to brighten Tony's future. We are very grateful to Jessica for all of her hard work which included liaising with local vets and regional rescue groups to get Tony the care he needed and fundraising to generate donations to assist animals like Tony. Thank you, Jessica. You brought inspiration and made a difference!

The KHS also offers sincere thanks to Beardall Animal Hospital for donating the exam and the surgery to trim Tony's teeth and start him him on his path to happiness, health and a second chance at love. This generous service meant a new beginning for a Tony. Beardall's support truly made possible the positive outcome for Tony.

And finally, thanks is given to New Moon Rabbit Rescue for accepting Tony into their care to see that he receives the further treatment and nurturing foster care required to enable him to move on to an adoptive home. Under their care, Tony, just this week, received another successful surgery (including a neuter!) and is now recovering with New Moon volunteers in Ottawa.
