Foster Program

Our Foster Program is designed for volunteers to provide a safe, temporary home for shelter animals requiring extra care and nurturing. Foster care volunteers play a vital role by aiding in the recovery of animals until they become adoptable.

What type of animals need foster care?
Animals being fostered may have mild health concerns, behaviour issues, or are experiencing problems adjusting to life at the Shelter. We often have females who are pregnant or still nursing their young and need time to themselves and their family. Regardless of the reason, these animals need some individual care and support which is unavailable in our shelter setting.

What are your requirements to be a foster volunteer?
If you are interested in becoming a foster volunteer, please note the following requirements:

  • You must be 18 years of age or more.
  • Your current pets must all be spayed or neutered and have up-to-date vaccinations.
  • You should have a separate room to isolate a foster animal.
  • You must have time to care for your foster animal.
  • You must abide by the Fostering Agreement that you sign upon joining the program.
Detailed information is available in our Fostering Agreement, found below.

What support do I have?
As a foster care volunteer, you will receive everything you need. The Kingston Humane Society provides food, litter and any medications, examinations and prescription diets. We support you too! If you have any questions or concerns, we are only a phone call away.

Can I adopt the animal in my care?
Though occasionally foster families decide to adopt a foster animal, this is not the intention of the program. Foster families can help many more animals by remaining in the program and helping animals become adopted through our regular Adoption Program.

I'm interested, what should I do now?

Review and complete our Fostering Agreement then contact our foster coordinator to set up an appointment. Here you can discuss expectations, ask questions and see how our foster program fits your lifestyle. When you commit your information will be kept on file and you will be contacted when we have a match.
