About KHS

Our Mission:
- To care for injured, abused and homeless animals
- To return or find homes for these animals
- To promote/organize spay and neuter programs
- To undertake cruelty investigations
- To provide emergency rescues
- To provide humane education
- To assist with the educational programs for St. Lawrence College
The Kingston Humane Society was founded in 1884 to provide shelter and care for homeless animals and investigate cases of animal cruelty in Kingston and surrounding communities. We promote responsible pet ownership and compassion and respect for all animals.
We are:
- A non-profit charitable animal welfare organization.
- Supported solely by the community, receiving no government funding to assist with our mission.
- The only open shelter in the region, accepting every animal brought to us.
- Committed to our mission and work with reputable and established rescue groups, province-wide.
- A last resort, providing haven from the hazards and cruelty of life on the street or neglect.
- A dues-paying affiliate of the OSPCA, with the authority to investigate complaints of animal cruelty. We receive no funding from the OSPCA.
- Associated with, nor do we endorse, any particular animal welfare group (other than the OSPCA) including other humane societies or rescue groups.
- Able to provide medical or boarding services for owned animals.
Programs
- Adoption
- Available animals are health-checked, vaccinated, microchipped, temperament-evaluated and come with a free six-week trial of pet insurance. Many of our pets are also spayed or neutered and those that are not come with a voucher toward the veterinary cost for those procedures. Adoption applicants are screened carefully to ensure the animals are placed in well-matched, forever homes. The Society also partners with local pet-oriented businesses which act as satellite adoption centres to find homes for even more cats and kittens.
- Humane Education
- Animals and our relationship with them are at the heart of Humane Education. By teaching children about behaviour, needs and care of animals, our program provides gentle yet powerful lessons in compassion, responsibility and respect for others. Each year our Humane Educator visits classrooms and daycares throughout the community. Our Education/Adoption Booths in the community, at local events, businesses and parks, provide us with the opportunity to educate the community about our many programs and to offer our animals a further opportunity for adoption.
- Foster Care
- Young or frail, sick animals benefit from our Foster Care program. Volunteers provide care in their home until the animals are able to return to the Shelter for adoption.
- Volunteer
- Whether you prefer to work with people or animals, at the shelter or from home, in a team setting or individually in the community, your talents are needed. Orientations are held throughout the year and announced on the KHS website.
- Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P)
- The Kingston Humane Society encourages pet owners to be responsible by keeping pets current on vaccinations and spaying/neutering all pets. To help pet owners who are in financial need, we are proud to offer the S.N.A.P program. This program provides a subsidy to financially assist individuals and famillies with the cost of getting their cat vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
